Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation

This book is good. If you're like me, an important part of your childhood revolved around saving princesses and hitting up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B. This book, CONSOLE WARS, brings it all back. And then some.

Word of warning: this book is hefty. Weighing in at 550 pages, this might be a good chunk of verbiage half that is covering decade of video gaming history. Is the journey worth every penny? Hell yeah!

Did you know the Donkey Kong game was designed to be a Popeye the Sailorman game? How about Tom Hanks being refused for the Mario film? And, would be the rumors true: did Michael Jackson write music for Sonic 3? There's a ton of information packed in to the book. Every time I became lured to skim ahead, something else caught my attention. The author, Blake Harris, weaves the discussion and happenings that he collected from over 200 interviews into an interesting narrative that comes from all directions of the industry.

I happened to be also particularly interested in the nearness of a Sega-Sony merge. Can you imagine the continuing state of video games if Sega released the Playstation with Sony? Nintendo had a chance, spurred Sony, and well you’ll that is to see about it all. As well as Sega of Japan’s involvement all along the way.

Marketing, strategy, and all sorts of the insider that is good are organized in full. Anyone that’s ever found a video game controller will discover this book fascinating. Even should youn't play video gaming, the approach to marketing and early 90s pop cultural is a blast (e.g., “Bo knows”, “Just Do It”, and Pepsi vs. Coke)

Book Description

Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation Hardcover – May 13, 2014
by Blake J. Harris (Author)

Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

The Art of Video Games: From Pac-Man to Mass Effect

Video gaming has always been an part that is enormous of life. Some of my fondest childhood memories were formed with a controller at your fingertips. Back in those days video games were aesthetically limited by the processing energy of that time period. No fictional universe had been explored before despite that, I was still able to have rich and immersive story experiences as I dove into exciting new worlds in ways. As I spent my youth, so did gaming. Now the medium permits beautiful artistic and artwork that is audio compliment the stories that designers are attempting to tell. This book does a wonderful job of chronicling that transition. With stunning visuals and developer/designer that is highly insightful, I have always been able to flip through and be consistently amazed at the revolution that is taking place each day on the market. Beyond education, the book has changed the way in which I game. Since picking it up I find myself appreciating the games I play more than I ever th...

Mortal Kombat X is selling "Easy Fatalities" for extra money

Not merely doesn't it affect the game by any means, it literally just allows you to do a fatality by hitting R2+another button, but you can also get them in game through The Krypt so it's not a problem at all. As usual gamers blowing something completely away from proportion. Edit: From reading a number of the comments I feel that some individuals have no idea how fatalities work in MK..(which I find just a little crazy but hey.) A fatality is just an extremely brutal move you could do by inputting a combo after you have already won the match. Fatalities have no impact on the end result associated with the match. These easy fatality tokens just let someone do a fatality by hitting only two buttons together as opposed to a combo string. source other  source

An Illustrated History of 151 Video Games: A detailed guide to the most important games; explores five decades of game evolution

This book is very good. I was raised in the 80s since I have came to be in 1981. Video gaming have always played a role during my life but mainly up through my early 20s. I still own and play the latest games (X-box One) but actual life gives me little time. Regardless of this, I love to carry on with with a few video game news, donate to magazines, etc. These activities have waned considerably within the last few year or two but nevertheless I like video game history and a book such as this is right up my alley. I will take my time reading it in small 5-20 minute sessions (i will not go into any longer detail than that) and there's a huge amount of information to read. A whole lot i shall likely skip so I would ike to arrive at my review to spell out why and the thing I like. What I Love: 1) Everyone loves all pages and posts specialized in almost every console. They provide back stories on development, provide images and even factoids in the pages. It's all great stuff but mi...
